Utility-scale battery energy storage capacity by state, reported in both power capacity (megawatts, MW) and energy capacity (megawatt-hours, MWh). This covers all operable grid-scale battery storage facilities, including those co-located with generation.
Battery storage capacity data are collected from facility operators through the EIA Form EIA-860 Annual Electric Generator Report. The EIA began reporting battery storage separately starting in 2016. Operating capacity through 2024 is from the annual EIA-860; the 2025 figure and the planned pipeline are from EIA-860M (preliminary monthly inventory, May 2026). Use the “Include planned” toggle to add planned and under-construction capacity by its expected online year (power capacity / MW only — EIA does not report planned energy capacity).
