Historical state-level coal production data (1960–2023) are sourced from the EIA State Energy Data System (SEDS). Data for the most recent year (2024) come from the EIA Annual Coal Report, which surveys coal mines directly.
Values are expressed in million short tons (1 short ton = 2,000 lbs ≈ 907 kg).
