Note: EIA reports that from 2023, improved reporting of data center and cryptocurrency operations moved a substantial amount of load between the commercial and industrial sectors. Sector trends across 2022–23 partly reflect this reclassification rather than a change in consumption; it is most pronounced in Wyoming, Oregon, North Dakota and Nebraska. State totals are unaffected.

What this data measures

Retail electricity consumption broken down by end-use sector — residential, commercial, and industrial — for each state. This shows how electricity demand is distributed across different parts of the economy.

How this data is constructed

Retail electricity sales by sector are collected from electric utilities through the EIA Form EIA-861 survey. Figures represent electricity delivered to customers, measured at the meter, and are summed across all utility types.
