What this data measures

Total retail electricity consumption by state, covering all end-use sectors combined: residential, commercial, and industrial. Figures represent electricity delivered to end customers, measured at the meter.

How this data is constructed

Retail electricity sales data are collected annually from electric utilities through the EIA Form EIA-861 survey. State totals are summed across all sectors and all utility types (investor-owned, publicly-owned, cooperative, and federal).
