Average annual electricity consumption per person by state, calculated by dividing total retail electricity sales by the state's population. This normalizes for population differences and allows comparison of energy intensity across states.
Retail electricity sales by state are sourced from the EIA Form EIA-861 survey. Population estimates are sourced from the US Census Bureau (decennial census and annual intercensal estimates).
Per-capita figures are computed by dividing total electricity sold (in kWh) by the mid-year resident population for each state and year.
