What this data measures

Total net electricity generation by state, covering all utility-scale power plants. This includes generation from all fuel sources — fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewables — and represents electricity produced before transmission losses.

How this data is constructed

Net generation data are collected from power plant operators through the EIA Form EIA-923 survey. State totals are summed across all generator types and all sectors (electric utilities, independent power producers, and combined heat and power plants).
