The share of electricity generated by each fuel source — coal, natural gas, nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, and others — for each state, shown at monthly resolution. Monthly data reveals seasonal patterns in the generation mix that annual averages obscure, such as the summer surge in solar and the spring peak in hydropower.
Monthly generation data by fuel type and state are collected from power plant operators through the EIA Form EIA-923. Only generation from the "Total Electric Power Industry" sector is included, covering utilities, independent power producers, and combined heat and power plants. Shares are computed by dividing each source's monthly generation by the total for that state and month.
