The average retail price of electricity paid by US consumers, broken down by sector — residential, commercial, and industrial — and adjusted for inflation. Prices are reported annually by the EIA, covering all 50 states and Washington D.C.
Nominal retail electricity prices are collected annually from electric utilities through the EIA Form EIA-861 survey. Average prices are computed by dividing total annual retail revenue by total kilowatt-hours sold, separately for each sector and state.
To adjust for inflation, nominal prices are multiplied by the ratio of the CPI in the base year (2024) to the CPI in each historical year, using the CPIAUCSL series from FRED.
