Note: Nominal electricity price data is adjusted for inflation using the All items Consumer Price Index (for Urban Consumers). The US national price is total revenue divided by total sales across all states, i.e. a sales-weighted average of state prices.

What this data measures

Monthly average retail electricity prices by state and sector — residential, commercial, industrial, and all sectors combined — adjusted for inflation to 2024 dollars. Monthly data gives a finer-grained view of price trends than annual averages.

How this data is constructed

Monthly retail electricity prices are sourced from the EIA Form EIA-861M (Monthly) survey. Average prices for each sector are computed by dividing total monthly retail revenue by kilowatt-hours sold.

To adjust for inflation, nominal prices are deflated using the monthly CPIAUCSL series from FRED, rebased to 2024.
