What this data measures

The cumulative change in total retail electricity consumption by state since a chosen base year, expressed in terawatt-hours. This shows the overall direction and magnitude of demand growth over a selected period.

How this data is constructed

Retail electricity sales by state are sourced from the EIA Form EIA-861 survey. Cumulative growth is computed by subtracting the base year's sales from each subsequent year's sales for each state.
