Total nameplate generating capacity by fuel source and state — the maximum output a power plant can produce under ideal conditions, as rated by the manufacturer. This is the installed base of generating infrastructure, not actual generation.
Nameplate capacity data are collected from electric power plant operators through the EIA Form EIA-860 Annual Electric Generator Report. Operating capacity through 2024 is from the annual EIA-860. The 2025 figure is preliminary: it takes the 2024 annual level and applies the additions and retirements EIA-860M (monthly inventory, May 2026) records for 2025, so its level stays anchored to the annual series rather than to a mid-2026 snapshot of what is still running. The planned pipeline is also from EIA-860M. Use the “Include planned” toggle to add planned and under-construction capacity by its expected online year (available for sources with an active pipeline).
